about

"Nature is molded into shape by human industry, by the sum strength of civilization. Matter is struggling to return to its natural state." - Ryuichi Sakamoto

An album against its own ambition, written and recorded over 5 years of classes and jobs and scrapped versions, to be listened to at high volume.

Most of the songs were drafted in their first form when I was a teenager, struggling to find joy, purpose, and stimulation in my environment, but finding some of it in sounds that contained energy and beauty and ugliness all once. As a result, creating intricate and stimulating guitar parts in a loud rock setting was a big part of what I wanted to accomplish with this album. All of the songs have three electric guitar parts, in standard tuning, with no effects used other than gain pedals, delay, and reverb. The focus was on how these parts interacted, so multi-guitar cluster chords and interlocking patterns pervade the album, as well as a few extended techniques.

The lyrics reflect the sense of futility I felt during that period as my place in the world as an artist and a human being began to feel smaller and smaller, despite having the desire to create something “great” like all of the artists I idolized. I drew a lot of inspiration from the Book of Ecclesiastes, which contains similar themes about death and how it is not only the destruction of our bodies, but also the destruction of all our accomplishments. "Memento" uses imagery inspired by the famous ethical dilemma of the fire in the art gallery. "Naissance" references the destruction of many paintings in the bombing of Milan. “Secondhand” references the unfinished Tower of Babel. But, like the Book of Ecclesiastes, the lyrics are also about finding or attempting to find some sort of contentment and beauty in and/or despite present circumstances.

So, with this in mind, here are my Decomposed Works.
